Die Romantikforschung der letzten 25 Jahre hat mit herausragenden Ergebnissen einen neuen Blick auf die Phase der Frühromantik hervorgebracht. Mit der Fokussierung auf einen kurzen, zweifellos besonders produktiven Zeitraum gingen jedoch implizite Bewertungen einher, eine Identifikation mit der als 'progressiv' angesehenen Frühromantik und eine Abgrenzung von der Entwicklung nach 1800, die als politisch und ästhetisch 'konservativ' galt. Der vorliegende Band reagiert auf diese Situation: Untersucht wird, wie frühromantische Konzepte unter den veränderten Bedingungen des 19. Jahrhunderts transformiert wurden. In welchem Konnex stehen die Phasen der Romantik, wie werden ästhetische Formen weiterentwickelt, wie werden die Subjektivitätskonzepte der Frühphase mit dem Bedürfnis nach Integration vermittelt, in welchem Verhältnis stehen das Wissen um die Vorläufigkeit mit der Behauptung von 'Wahrheit'?
